Fossil Discovery Exhibit in Big Bend
Project's Summary
The Fossil Discovery Exhibit, located at the Fossil Discovery Center in Big Bend, showcases one of the world's most remarkable fossil records, spanning an impressive 100 million years. This extraordinary collection highlights 35 million years from the Age of Reptiles to the Age of Mammals, featuring iconic fossils unique to this region. Developed through a partnership between Big Bend Conservancy, Big Bend National Park, Lake Flato Architects, and EDX Exhibits, this project aims to create an engaging interpretive experience that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape.

The challenge faced was significant: to design an exhibit that is unstaffed, requires minimal maintenance, and captivates visitors while being fully integrated into the natural settings of the park. Through extensive collaboration with park paleontologists, interpreters, and an adept architectural team, EDX was able to craft a layout that not only supports the compelling narrative of the fossils but also enhances the visitor's understanding of paleontology. The result is a seamless blend of architecture and nature that invites exploration and discovery.

Unveiled in 2017, the Fossil Discovery Exhibit is an open-air pavilion designed as four distinct spaces, each representing different geological eras. Visitors are greeted with larger-than-life iconic fossils, each meticulously placed to reflect their significance. A custom mural further enriches the experience by providing context, depicting the environments and species that once inhabited these eras. This thoughtful design allows guests to immerse themselves in the story of evolution and the rich geological history of the area.

Central to the exhibit is a spacious area that opens to the breathtaking landscape, offering visitors a place for rest and reflection. Viewing scopes are strategically positioned to connect guests with geological formations, enhancing their engagement with the site. The goal is to ignite a sense of wonder in visitors of all ages, encouraging everyone to connect with the ancient world and foster a deeper appreciation for the park's unique paleontology.

The Fossil Discovery Exhibit is also a model of inclusivity, emphasizing programmatic accessibility. The incorporation of tactile elements such as animal outlines and bronze reproductions ensures that visitors with low vision, hearing impairments, and cognitive differences can fully engage with the content. This commitment to accessibility was recognized with the Excellence in Exhibition Award from the American Alliance of Museums, celebrating the successful integration of the building, narrative, and landscape.
