Project's Summary

GGLO's Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center: A Primal Monument to Cultural Awareness and Acceptance

The Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center is a monumental project designed and created by the GGLO architectural studio, and it stands at the main entry to the WSU Pullman Campus. The building is not only a symbol of artistic excellence but also a testament to the values of cultural awareness and acceptance.

Inspired by indigenous philosophy, which emphasizes the interdependence between humans and nature, the Cultural Center integrates seamlessly into the restored native Palouse Prairie landscape. The design of the building, including the undulating floor, roof, and walls, echoes the topography of the site.

The primary gathering space of the Cultural Center is called the "living room." This space is designed to be the center of cultural celebrations by the University and the surrounding communities. The University's land grant mission, which is to serve traditionally underserved cultures, including Native American, Latino/Latina, Asian/Pacific Islander, and African American, is reflected in the design of the four knowledge rooms. These rooms are oriented towards the campus and open to each other, providing educational forums for deep exploration of the individuality and interconnectedness of different cultures.

The seamless integration of indoor-outdoor celebration spaces, joined by symbolically patterned paving and transparent operable walls, is a testament to the GGLO's commitment to creating a culturally inclusive and welcoming environment. The singular, iconic, and sheltering roof, evocative of the Palouse and paying homage to the region's heritage, adds to the building's unique character.

In conclusion, the Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center is more than just a building; it is a primal monument to cultural awareness and acceptance. It is a testament to the values of respect and interdependence between humans and nature, and it creates a welcoming environment for all cultures. The GGLO architectural studio has outdone itself with this project, and the WSU Pullman Campus is lucky to have such a magnificent structure to represent its commitment to cultural diversity.
