ITF HEADQUARTERS, SOUTHWARK
Project's Summary
Historic Victorian factory with a well-preserved main façade, the old Hanover House commands respect. For 'Day & Martin,' a frantic staff worked behind this opulent facade in the late 1800s to produce 'blacking,' (shoe polish).
There has been a progressive remodelling of the building's interior that now houses the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF House). Historic open work floors have been restored while Victorian workmanship, such as riveted iron and brick work and barrel vault ceilings, have been celebrated in the renovations.
With a new material palette that pays tribute to the building's history, the new services are limited to running parallel to major walls and access levels, so as not to distract from the delicate above ironwork.
