Flexible and Sustainable Collapsible Workstations for Small Offices
Project's Summary
Collapsable Workstations: Creating Flexible Office Spaces
Taylor and Miller Architecture and Design has come up with an innovative solution for a small not-for-profit organization in Manhattan that needed a flexible office space for its constantly fluctuating workforce. The challenge was to create a functional workspace within a relatively confining office space. The architects utilized the mechanics of an existing collapsible filing system to create office partitions that move and allow for the reconfiguration of the offices.
Flexible and Configurable Workstations
These collapsible workstations can be configured to allow for up to seven workstations when fully separated and fully unfolded. They can also be configured to collapse completely, allowing the office space to be used for events and larger team-centric workspaces. The partitions are designed for maximum flexibility, which is essential for a small organization with a constantly changing workforce.
Spatial Relationship between the Partitions
At a detail level, the partitions are designed to be spatially bound together. The inward faces of each partition have been excavated with the same shape, so that what is a storage box protruding on one side is a recessed storage cubby hole on the other. This creates a unique spatial relationship between the partitions, making them stronger and stronger as they are compressed together. Finally, when collapsed completely, the carved space within is concealed, creating a clean and functional workspace.
Sustainable and Cost-Effective Design
The collapsible workstations designed by Taylor and Miller Architecture and Design are not only functional but also sustainable and cost-effective. The use of an existing filing system as the basis for the partitions is an environmentally responsible choice that reduces waste and the need for new materials. The flexible design also means that the not-for-profit organization can make the most of its limited office space without the need for costly renovations or expansions.
In conclusion, the collapsible workstations created by Taylor and Miller Architecture and Design provide a creative solution for a small not-for-profit organization in Manhattan. The flexible and configurable workstations allow for maximum use of the limited office space, while the unique spatial relationship between the partitions creates a functional and aesthetically pleasing workspace. The use of an existing filing system as the basis for the partitions also makes this a sustainable and cost-effective design solution.
