Project's Summary

The ground floor of a building located in the charming neighborhood of Sarrià in Barcelona has undergone a remarkable transformation. Originally constructed in the early 20th century, the building was in a dire state with significant dampness, poor sanitation, and termite infestation in its wooden beams. However, thanks to the vision of the ISABELLOPEZVILALTA+ASSOCIATES architectural studio, the renovation has breathed new life into this dilapidated space.

The primary goal of the renovation was to address the clearly deficient and unbalanced distribution of the space. Additionally, improving the overall comfort and optimizing the distribution of natural light were essential considerations. To achieve this, the interior layout was reimagined, placing the common areas near the courtyard. This redesign not only allows for an expansive view of the outdoors but also establishes a strong connection with the exterior environment.

An integral part of the renovation involved enhancing the insulation and ventilation of the perimeter. Dry lining and ventilation techniques were employed to create a more comfortable and energy-efficient living space. The entire surface was covered with a sanitary wrought iron piece, adding a touch of elegance and durability to the interior.

Respecting the historical value and memory of the building was of utmost importance during the rehabilitation process. Careful attention was paid to preserving the original features and traces of its past, ensuring that the building's character remained intact. For instance, the main room now showcases a box-like structure formed by doors that were salvaged from the dwelling, adding a unique touch to the renovated space.

Simplicity and authenticity were key principles guiding the choice of materials for the project. All materials used were selected for their natural appearance and treated without pretension. Three distinct finishes were incorporated, including a glossy finish for closets and the kitchen, a matte finish for the flooring, and warm re-used wood for a cozy touch.

Additionally, the dwelling was equipped with a state-of-the-art home automation system, transforming it into an energy-efficient machine. This system controls the energy expenditure by automatically adjusting the blinds based on solar incidence, promoting cross-ventilation to regulate temperature. Underfloor heating, powered by an aero-thermic machine, further contributes to maintaining a comfortable and sustainable living environment.

The integration of the electric and audiovisual installations seamlessly blends with the home automation system. This innovative approach ensures that the technology is discreetly incorporated into the design, allowing for an enhanced and streamlined living experience.

In conclusion, the transformation of the ground floor in Sarrià is a testament to the skill and creativity of the ISABELLOPEZVILALTA+ASSOCIATES architectural studio. Through careful planning and execution, this once dilapidated space has been reborn as a comfortable, energy-efficient, and aesthetically pleasing dwelling. The project's respect for the building's history and its thoughtful integration of modern technology showcase the studio's commitment to both preserving the past and embracing the future.
