Octo-Dome Pavilion
Project's Summary
The Octo-Dome Pavilion, a stunning example of contemporary architecture, has emerged as a significant landmark in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Nestled within the revitalized industrial zone of the former gas-holder, this architectural gem serves not just as a building but as a bridge between the past and the future. With a capacity to accommodate up to 300 people, it functions as a multimedia gallery and public space, inviting visitors to experience art and community in an innovative setting.
Designed with a keen emphasis on modern engineering, the Octo-Dome Pavilion features a wide-span vaulted structure that seamlessly fits into its rectangular site. The architectural ingenuity lies in its eight-domed roof, which elegantly marries spherical and rectangular geometries. This harmonious blend allows for a unique visual appeal while ensuring structural integrity, demonstrating how modern architecture can respect and enhance its surroundings.
The construction of the pavilion showcases advanced manufacturing techniques, employing CNC machines to create its primary components—frames and covers. This approach minimizes the need for complex construction tools, making the building process efficient and straightforward. The combination of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and robust steel connectors not only contributes to the pavilion's monumental aesthetics but also ensures its durability and functionality in the face of the harsh northern climate.
Addressing the challenges posed by extreme weather, the Octo-Dome Pavilion is engineered to withstand substantial snow loads, reflecting the demands of its geographical location. The supporting structure not only serves its primary role but also enhances the architectural character of the pavilion, making it an integral part of the urban landscape. The meticulous design and construction techniques employed in this project highlight the intersection of art, engineering, and sustainability.
With its frontal panoramic glazing framed in aluminum and a versatile cover made from architectural textiles, the Octo-Dome Pavilion embodies a forward-thinking approach to building design. Spanning an area of 360 m² with dimensions of 18x30 meters and a height of 7 meters, this pavilion is a testament to the innovative spirit of Geosota and a beacon of modern architecture in Saint Petersburg. It stands as a symbol of transformation, where industrial heritage meets contemporary design.
