Project's Summary

The Fullam Residence, originally conceived by the iconic architect Paul Rudolph in the late 1950s, represents a significant moment in modern architecture. Although the structure was not built exactly as envisioned, it was finally completed in 1958/59 with two out of the three original bays. This design allowed for future expansion while maintaining the essential design objectives set forth by Rudolph. In 2014, our firm, Wolstenholme Associates, LLC, was honored to be commissioned to create an addition that would not only complement the original design but also enhance the living experience of the new owners.

Throughout the construction of the addition, we faced numerous challenges, particularly in aligning the new structure with the original's aesthetic. The original residence's reliance on massing and its distinctive stone masonry demanded meticulous attention to detail. Each element of the addition had to match the existing stone in size, color, and pattern. We worked collaboratively with the builder to ensure a seamless integration of the new Pennsylvania fieldstone with the existing materials, achieving a result that appears as though it all originated from the same quarry.

A striking feature of the design is the undulating roof that extends from the original structure, creating an illusion of floating above the trapezoidal windows. This innovative roof configuration, inspired by Rudolph's original designs, allows for passive solar heating during winter while providing shade in the summer months. To maintain the historical integrity, we partnered with a specialized window company in Europe that crafted triple-pane windows, perfectly mimicking the original design. Additionally, all existing northern windows were retrofitted with matching triple-pane units, enhancing the home's energy efficiency.

In our commitment to sustainability, all lighting fixtures were upgraded to LED technology, preserving the original aesthetic while significantly reducing energy consumption. We also implemented spray foam insulation within the new construction, maximizing energy performance and contributing to the overall efficiency of the residence. These thoughtful modifications not only respect the original design but also ensure that the Fullam Residence meets contemporary energy standards, making it a model of sustainable living.

Ultimately, the addition to the Fullam Residence showcases a successful blend of historical reverence and modern innovation. Our design honors Paul Rudolph's architectural genius while integrating contemporary practices that enhance the building's sustainability. This project stands as a testament to the collaboration between the past and the present, celebrating the enduring legacy of one of America's most revered architects. The Fullam Residence is not just a home; it is a narrative of architectural evolution and a commitment to preserving the beauty of modernism.
