Project's Summary

The project titled 'Distortion' is a captivating art installation situated in the atrium space of the City of Cedar Rapids U.S. Cellular Convention Center. Created by the talented team at Volkan Alkanoglu | DESIGN, this unique piece explores the visual effects of reflection and geometrical interference on distorted surfaces.

Occupying the Box office wall within the Convention Center atrium, the sculpture serves as a spatial link that connects all levels through both visual and physical connections. Its contemporary design serves as a striking contrast to the surrounding architecture, providing a focal point for the space.

The sculpture takes the form of a distorted field within a three-dimensional matrix of extrusion. Its vibrant and colorful pattern, distributed throughout the field, offers multiple interpretations and a playful ambiguity between surface, overlay, and visual perception. The choice of colored aluminum, with a spectrum of multiple colors, is carefully balanced to complement the interior qualities and tonality of the Convention Center atrium.

Constructed using flat tessellated sheets of aluminum, the sculpture showcases the art of tessellation, which involves creating a two-dimensional plane using repeated geometric shapes with no overlaps or gaps. The project's geometry consists of multiple single surfaces that highlight intrinsic and extrinsic qualities through geometric deformation.

During both day and night, the sculpture creates ever-changing reflections and patterns within the atrium space, offering occupants continuously new and captivating visual experiences.

The 'Distortion' project by Volkan Alkanoglu | DESIGN is a testament to the power of art to transform and elevate spaces. Its innovative design and thought-provoking aesthetics make it a captivating addition to the City of Cedar Rapids U.S. Cellular Convention Center, enhancing the overall experience for visitors and occupants alike.
