Connect the Mind and Body at Cortex Park: An Innovative Education and Movement Space
Project's Summary
Cortex Park: Bridging the Gap Between Innovation and Education
Architectural firm ADEPT has created a groundbreaking project that brings together four educational and innovation programs under one roof. Cortex Park is a building that aims to connect students, researchers, and staff through shared sports facilities and an urban character. It is designed to challenge both the mind and body, while establishing a close relationship between the building and its surroundings.
A Hybrid of Knowledge and Movement
The four individual houses that make up Cortex Park are separate volumes, but connected in several ways. The urban space flows into the building at the entrance level, while crisscrossing stairs span the triple-height space atrium. The common area on the top floor connects the houses and houses the sports facilities, which hover over the four heavy houses and endow the building with a literally enlightening identity. The result is a new hybrid between knowledge and movement that encourages collaboration and interaction.
A Center of Social and Administrative Functions
Cortex Park features a large skylight that draws daylight down on the common square where a number of social and administrative functions are located. These spaces serve as center points in the central meeting space of the building, encouraging interaction and community building. Standing on the square looking up, the crisscrossing stairs are experienced as an additional spatial layer in the building. Each of the individual houses in the building has its own facade expression in graphic concrete, contrasting the lightness of the stairs.
An Active Environment for Education, Research, and Movement
Cortex Park is a building that is designed to be active around the clock. When darkness falls, it is lit up to tell the story of an environment that promotes education, research, and movement. The sports facilities that span between the four houses create a physical and mental experience of sharing, encouraging collaboration and interaction between students, researchers, and staff. Overall, Cortex Park is a groundbreaking project that bridges the gap between innovation and education, creating a space where both the mind and body can thrive.
