Big Timber Residence: Serene Montana Retreat & Architectural Marvel
Project's Summary
The Big Timber Residence, a project by the renowned architectural studio Hughesumbanhowar Architects, is nestled within a 2000-acre ranch in Montana. Surrounded only by cottonwood trees that line the banks of the property's river, this serene location offers a breathtaking view of the distant Crazies mountain range. The setting evokes a sense of the unexploited American West from a bygone era, reminiscent of a century ago.
One of the main challenges faced by the house is the potential for the river to flood its banks during the late spring melt-off in the nearby mountains. To address this threat, the architects have ingeniously designed the house to sit on a 30-inch tall porous plinth, elevating the finish floors well above the flood line. With the exception of the elevated driveway, the house appears to float on the river as the waters flow around and beneath its foundation. This clever design ensures that the house remains protected from potential flooding, allowing its inhabitants to enjoy the stunning surroundings without worry.
The location of the house within the floodplain also takes advantage of the presence of spring-fed ponds. These ponds provide year-round water features, especially during drought cycles when the river may slow to a trickle. They add to the beauty and tranquility of the residence, creating a harmonious blend of architecture and nature.
Upon arrival, the Big Timber Residence reveals itself in two distinct and separate facades. As the visitor enters, two interlocking objects come into view: a two-level glass wedge and a one-story wooden bar. These structures form a unique "T" shape, seamlessly merging modern design with natural elements. The western side of the residence features a glass-enclosed hall, which not only adds to the width of the wooden structure but also pays homage to the shed-covered walkways found in frontier towns of the past.
The Big Timber Residence is an architectural marvel that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. It offers a retreat where residents can immerse themselves in the untamed beauty of the Montana landscape. With its innovative design, the house provides a safe haven from potential flooding while allowing its inhabitants to embrace the breathtaking views and experience the allure of the unspoiled American West.
