Sensitively restoring historic Al Rusafa with Baghdad Design Centre
Project's Summary
Designing a Cultural Centre in Historic Al Rusafa, Baghdad
The AIDIA STUDIO architectural studio has taken on a monumental project, to create a cultural centre in the historic district of Al Rusafa in Baghdad. Before any physical work is started, the team has taken a virtual journey to immerse themselves in the rich history and memories of the area. With a narrative focused on memory, heritage, and renaissance, the team aims to sensitively restore the existing buildings while introducing new forms and materials to create a cultural hub for designers, architects, and artists.
Drawing from the Vibrancy of the Area
The inspiration for the design of the cultural centre comes from the street markets of Al Muttanabbi Street, the vibrancy of the suqs populating the narrow alleys, and the beauty of the architecture still present in the historical landmarks of Al-Qishla, King Ghazi Mosque, and other buildings in Al Rusafa. The team's goal is to replace the narrative of pain, mutilation, and neglect with one that highlights the rich history and heritage of the area.
Sensitively Restoring Existing Buildings
The proposed design for the cultural centre focuses on sensitively restoring the existing buildings without plastering over the scars that bear the weight of history. The team aims to halt the decay of the buildings without re-building or beautifying them. The existing brick foundations of the imposing neoclassical façade will be exposed, along with its intricate decorative features. Where there is damage or partial demolition, new materials will be introduced, keeping a record of what is old and what is new.
Introducing a New Catalogue of Forms and Materials
In addition to sensitively restoring existing buildings, the team will introduce a new catalogue of forms and materials to create the cultural centre. A cast-in-situ tinted concrete structure will house the new program for the building, while bronze mashrabiya screens and a colonnade will shield the building from the sun. The roof will open to the north to let in natural light. The entrance from the main street will welcome visitors with a grand triple-height reception. The front part of the Design Centre will house a library on the two top levels, while the back will be the location for the exhibition hall, co-working offices, and workshops for designers, architects, and artists.
In conclusion, the AIDIA STUDIO architectural studio aims to create a cultural centre that is not only a hub for designers, architects, and artists but also a celebration of the rich history and heritage of the district of Al Rusafa. The team's focus on sensitively restoring the existing buildings and introducing a new catalogue of forms and materials is a testament to their commitment to preserving the area's history while looking towards the future.
