Project's Summary

Funded by the NYC Department for the Aging, the Annunciata Bethell Senior Center project undertaken by Ivan Brice Architecture aimed to transform a 6,500 square foot supermarket building into a vibrant hub catering to the needs of senior citizens. The center, located on 204th street, not only provides nutritious meals to over 100 seniors but also offers a wide range of activities such as arts and crafts, billiards, dance and exercise, and computer instruction. The architectural design seamlessly incorporates a unique bend in the building's facade, creating an inviting atmosphere for the seniors.

To ensure the long-term functionality, durability, and easy maintenance of the space, the interior was thoughtfully designed. Features such as porcelain tile and solid vinyl floors, a between-floor waterproofing membrane, acoustically-textured cementitious ceilings, and protective rubber chair rails were incorporated. These elements not only enhance the aesthetics of the center but also contribute to its efficient upkeep. The commercial kitchen was meticulously designed and equipped in accordance with the dietary guidelines set by the agency's supervisory chef, guaranteeing the provision of wholesome meals to the seniors.

The exterior work involved the installation of a new roof, which required rebuilding the metal decking on the new steel truss roof structure. Additionally, several north-facing roof monitors were incorporated to flood the dining room with natural light, creating a bright and cheerful ambiance. The entrance was made accessible through the implementation of a new custom metal-panel facade, complemented by a cantilevered marquee and an ADA-compliant ramp.

Throughout the construction process, careful budgeting, detailed shop drawings, regular project meetings, and frequent site visits were conducted to ensure high quality control. The project team's dedication and attention to detail resulted in the successful transformation of the former supermarket into a state-of-the-art senior center that meets the needs of the community. The Annunciata Bethell Senior Center, with its innovative design and range of services, stands as a testament to the importance of creating inclusive spaces for senior citizens to thrive and enjoy their golden years.
