Past Present Future Exhibit - Phoenix Art Museum
Project's Summary
The Past Present Future Exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum is an extraordinary showcase of Brazilian art, spanning from the 1990s to the 2010s. Curated by the innovative WORKSBUREAU, this exhibition features a remarkable collection of 70 artworks created by 59 visionary artists. The exhibition not only highlights the rich diversity of Brazilian art but also engages visitors through its thematic exploration and innovative presentation. Each artwork reflects the vibrant culture and creative spirit of Brazil, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a unique artistic experience.

The exhibition is ingeniously organized around five distinct themes, each providing a lens through which to view the multifaceted nature of contemporary Brazilian art. The first theme, 'The Body/The Social Body,' confronts the complex interplay between individual identity and societal norms. Through a variety of mediums, artists challenge the traditional perceptions of the body, encouraging reflections on how personal and cultural identities are shaped by social constructs.

Another captivating theme, 'Shifting Identities,' explores the fluidity of identity in our globalized world. Artists delve into how globalization, technology, and migration influence the way we perceive ourselves and others. This theme showcases how identity is a dynamic process, constantly evolving and adapting to external influences, reflecting the rich tapestry of Brazilian society and its diversity.

The theme 'The Reinvention of the Monochrome' invites visitors to reconsider the boundaries of monochromatic art. Artists in this section push the limits of traditional monochrome, experimenting with texture, form, and color to breathe new life into this classic style. This exploration challenges viewers to expand their understanding of monochrome and appreciate its potential for innovation and expression.

Lastly, 'Impossible Objects' encourages visitors to engage with art that transcends reality. Artists craft works that defy conventional expectations, inviting viewers to explore the intersection of imagination and artistic creation. This theme sparks curiosity and wonder, prompting visitors to question the limits of what art can represent. Overall, the Past Present Future Exhibit serves as a testament to the richness of Brazilian art and the innovative spirit of its creators.
