Operation Huey Restoration: Honoring Vietnam War Veterans with Memorial Plaza
Project's Summary
The New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation has embarked on an exciting new project called "Operation Huey Restoration." This endeavor aims to create a memorial plaza centered around a fully restored U.S. Army Helicopter, the UH-1H, affectionately known as a "Huey." As we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of this iconic Huey in 2013, our partnership with the Foundation over the past two decades has been instrumental, particularly with the design of the Vietnam Era Museum & Educational Center on the premises. One crucial aspect of this project was to ensure that the new memorial seamlessly integrated with the existing buildings and plazas on site.
Initially, the planned location for the memorial plaza presented us with several challenges. The topography of the area increased construction costs, and it felt detached from the heart of the Foundation's main axis. However, our dedicated team worked tirelessly to find a solution. Ultimately, we decided to situate the memorial within the existing Museum parking lot, allowing it to stand adjacent to the Education Center and connect directly with the existing memorials and plazas. This strategic positioning ensures that the memorial becomes an integral part of the overall site, providing visitors with a cohesive and immersive experience.
The New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation holds a unique distinction as the only museum in the country dedicated solely to the Vietnam Era and its profound impact on American Culture. The newly created memorial plaza offers a poignant opportunity for visitors of all ages to pay tribute to those who served in the Vietnam War. The restored Huey helicopter will serve as a permanent symbol, serving as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave soldiers.

In summary, the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation's Operation Huey Restoration is an ambitious undertaking that aims to create a memorial plaza centered around a fully restored UH-1H "Huey" helicopter. Through our collaboration with the Foundation, we have strategically positioned the memorial within the existing Museum parking lot to ensure seamless integration with the Education Center and other existing memorials and plazas. This project holds great significance as it allows visitors to honor Vietnam War veterans and serves as a lasting symbol of their sacrifice.
