Ascending Route to Healing: Museum of Memory of Colombia
Project's Summary
Winning Proposal of International Competition for Museum of National Memory of Bogota
The Museum of National Memory of Bogota is a project that aims to honor the victims of the Colombian conflict while creating a space for reflection and healing. The winning proposal of the international competition was a collaboration between estudio__entresitio and Pacheco Estudio de Arquitectura.
Ascending, Sequential, and Emotional Route
The design of the building is an ascending, sequential, and emotional route that takes visitors from the ground to the urban sky. The journey begins and ends with 24 peaks that represent the different political-philosophical positions of the actors of the Colombian conflict. These peaks lightly touch the ground and the sky, symbolizing the beginning and end of the journey.
Urban Concrete Piece
The building itself is an urban concrete piece that slightly touches the two fundamental ends of the urban space, soil and sky. The exhibition halls are located in the middle of the building, and the ascending route takes visitors through them to the "garden of nostalgia" on the deck, beyond the "place of mourning," and finally to the horizon.
Light and Healing
The "garden of nostalgia" is a place where visitors can reflect and heal from the wounds of the past. Nostalgia, in its Greek origin, means "pain for an ancient wound," and the healing process must begin with light. The six exhibition halls are of cubic proportions, and they are crowned with four vertical skylights in the form of a peak. This allows natural light to enter the building and create a healing atmosphere.
In conclusion, the winning proposal of the international competition for the Museum of National Memory of Bogota is a stunning architectural feat that honors the victims of the Colombian conflict while creating a space for reflection and healing. The ascending, sequential, and emotional route takes visitors on a journey through the building, from the ground to the urban sky, and the "garden of nostalgia" provides a space for healing and reflection.
