Project's Summary

Milkywave: A Reused Yoghurt Bottle Installation for Beijing Design Week 2012

Milkywave, an installation created by the AIDIA STUDIO architectural team, was showcased during the Beijing Design Week 2012. The installation consisted of 1664 glazed ceramic yoghurt bottles that were repurposed and reconstituted into a wave of light that looped around the exhibition space.

Reflecting on City-Making Practice

Milkywave was designed to reflect on the practice of city-making through the objects that shape the collective memory. The installation aimed to challenge the way we think about seemingly mundane objects, such as yoghurt bottles, and how they coalesce with unique cultural habits and environmental conditions to form the character of a city. The installation aimed to rethink the way we perceive and use these objects to create new configurations and systems.

Found Object of the Hutongs DNA

The AIDIA STUDIO team chose the yoghurt ceramic bottle as the core component for the installation. The bottle is a quintessential part of the hutongs DNA, and millions of bottles circulate the streets of Beijing, meeting Beijingers on their corner shop, subway stall, or local square. The team was drawn to the bottle's materiality, concealed transparency, and subtle shine. The result was a collection of 1664 bottles reconstituted into a new entity, familiar enough to activate old memories and radically new to enable new sensations.

Celebrating Reuse of Mass-Produced Objects

Milkywave celebrated the reuse of mass-produced objects as core components for the design of new systems and configurations. The installation challenged the perception of objects as disposable and provided a new way to think about the reuse of objects. Milkywave was a beautiful and thought-provoking installation that showcased the power of creativity and innovation in design.

In conclusion, Milkywave was a beautiful and thought-provoking installation that challenged the way we think about the objects that shape our cities. The installation showcased the power of creativity and innovation in design and celebrated the reuse of mass-produced objects. AIDIA STUDIO's Milkywave was a testament to the power of design to create new configurations and systems that can reshape our world.
