Project's Summary

The Taichung City Government is celebrating the hundredth birthday of the creation of "Taiwan R.O.C." with a new architectural project called the Bionic Arch. This innovative design is part of the larger master plan called "Taichung Gateway - Active Gateway City," which aims to honor local building traditions and symbolize the new dynamics of Taiwan's economic, political, social, and cultural achievements.

The Bionic Arch is envisioned as an international model of green building for the 21st century. It combines and surpasses the nine major indicators defining a green building by law, while also intensifying the relationship between the building site and the surrounding Taichung Gateway Park. The tower features environmental integration of the park and green land, as well as the integration of green vertical platforms, sky gardens, and living façades. It promotes interaction between humans and the natural environment, emphasizing cohabitation and a respectful attitude towards nature.

One of the main goals of the Bionic Arch is to raise awareness of climate change and the need for environmental protection. The tower is designed to be 100% self-sufficient with zero CO2 emissions, making it a landmark of sustainability. By using new sustainable energies such as solar and wind power, coupled with botanical and bio-technologies, the tower actively contributes to the government's energy-saving and carbon emission reduction policies.

The project site for the Bionic Arch is located within the Taichung Gateway City, stretching from Road 30M-83 to Park Avenue 3. The site area is approximately 4.4 hectares, but the footprint of the arch itself does not exceed one hectare. The tower is centered at the intersection of two main axes in the master plan, "Park Avenue 3" and the pedestrian "Green Corridor." Its design is inspired by nature, with an aerodynamic geometry that incorporates sustainable technologies and considers the dominant winds in the area.

The Bionic Arch consists of three main functional entities: Taiwan Tower, the Museum of Taichung City Development, and affiliated facilities such as offices and meeting rooms. The tower will serve as a sightseeing and recreational destination, offering visitors a panoramic view of the Taiwan Strait and Taichung Harbour. It will also function as a telecommunication base and an environmental quality monitoring station for sustainable energy research.

The Museum of Taichung City Development, located on the ground floor of the tower, will showcase the city's history, urban design, industrial development, and more. It will provide education on energy conservation, carbon reduction, and ecological city practices. The affiliated facilities, including offices and public spaces, will be accessible through four individual entrances.

The Bionic Arch incorporates several design criteria to ensure its functionality and safety. The vertical circulation layout includes decentralized cores of staircases and elevators with an air pressure control system. Fire control measures such as water sprinklers and spatial separations are implemented, along with fire escape ladders and outdoor platforms for evacuation. The structure of the tower is designed to withstand earthquakes, typhoons, and other potentially damaging events.

As part of Taiwan's commitment to green architecture, the Bionic Arch aims to exceed the nine major indexes for green building compliance. It strives for the highest level of certification, Diamond level, based on LEED criteria. The tower incorporates sustainable practices such as planting green spaces, water conservation, daily energy efficiency, carbon dioxide reduction, waste reduction, and protection of biodiversity. It also focuses on refining the interior environment for occupant comfort and health.

The Bionic Arch is a groundbreaking project that showcases the possibilities of sustainable architecture. With its suspended gardens and advanced technologies, it creates a symbiotic ecosystem that interacts with its surroundings and reduces the ecological footprint in urban areas. The tower's design integrates renewable technologies, such as solar glass and wind turbines, to ensure self-sufficiency and provide lighting for the Gateway Park. It represents the future of sustainable development in Taiwan and embodies the spirit of the "Green Silicon Island" initiative.
