BELLA VISTA II - Enhancing Dolomites UNESCO with Innovative Architecture
Project's Summary
Messner Architects, commissioned by Fondazione Dolomiti-Dolomiten-Dolomites-Dolomitis, has undertaken a remarkable project to enhance the value and popularity of the Dolomites. The aim is to create architectonic, landscaping, and graphic standards for look-outs within the World Heritage Site Dolomiti UNESCO. Recognizing the sensitivity of the surrounding alpine region, the architects have taken a unique approach to transform the landscape rather than adding discrete structures to it.
The architects have ingeniously cut the soil and raised it to create a floating platform that partially hovers above the ground. The outer perimeter of this platform is constructed with steel and filled with rubble sourced from the site itself, seamlessly blending the building with its natural context. This strategic design blurs the boundaries between the structure and its surroundings, ensuring a harmonious integration into the existing landscape.
A striking feature of this design is a small canyon that leads to a circular opening at the center of the platform. Within this opening, information about the Dolomites is stored, providing visitors with a unique experience. The architects have also incorporated a circular index made of stainless steel, showcasing the visible summits. Furthermore, additional information about the landscape and the geology of the Dolomites can be found on the outer skirt of the index, offering visitors a comprehensive understanding of this remarkable region.
The Dolomites were recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2009 due to the aesthetic value of its landscape and the scientific importance of its geology and geomorphology. To protect this exceptional area, Fondazione Dolomiti-Dolomiten-Dolomites-Dolomitis was established by the provinces of Belluno, Bolzano, Pordenone, Trento, and Udine. Covering approximately 142,000 hectares, this UNESCO World Heritage Site spans across a vast Alpine area, comprising nine distinct mountainous systems separated by valleys, rivers, and other mountains. It is truly an archipelago of natural wonders nestled within the boundaries of five Italian provinces.
This innovative project, the BELLA VISTA II - Dolomites UNESCO Viewpoint Mastlè, showcases the commitment of Fondazione Dolomiti-Dolomiten-Dolomites-Dolomitis and Messner Architects to preserve and enhance the value of the Dolomites. By seamlessly integrating architectural and landscaping elements into the natural surroundings, this project not only enhances the visual appeal of the area but also provides visitors with a unique and informative experience. The Dolomites, with their breathtaking beauty and remarkable geological significance, continue to captivate and inspire all those who visit this extraordinary World Heritage Site.
