Bel & Main: DMAA's Striking Urban Quarter in Vienna
Project's Summary
Bel & Main represents a significant achievement in contemporary architecture, crafted by the renowned Delugan Meissl Associated Architects. This remarkable project consists of three interconnected high-rise buildings that redefine urban living next to Vienna's Central Station. The design emerged victorious from a competitive process in 2015, showcasing a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal.
The architectural concept is anchored by a base structure that not only delineates the plot's edges but also contributes to a cohesive urban identity. Unlike traditional approaches that often employ diverse elements to differentiate building façades, DMAA has utilized a sophisticated grid system and a uniform color palette. This strategy integrates the distinct volumes into a singular, striking urban form that enhances the neighborhood's character.
The façades of the buildings are characterized by their rigorous grid patterns and ample full-height glazing, which together reflect the diverse functions housed within. Each structure is strategically positioned to maximize views and create inviting public spaces. A thoughtfully designed network of pathways allows residents and visitors to navigate the quarter, starting from a vibrant square adjacent to the 21er Haus and leading into a series of increasingly private outdoor areas.
The ground floor of the complex is a hub of activity, accommodating a restaurant, meeting rooms, and public leisure spaces, alongside a kindergarten that features a unique rooftop playground. Above this vibrant base, the residential tower rises 60 meters, offering 209 premium rental apartments with nearly 17,000 square meters of usable area, while the adjacent hotel provides 133 studios and apartments ranging from 28 to 50 square meters.
In addition to the residential and hospitality components, Bel & Main boasts approximately 17,300 square meters of office space across 18 floors, allowing for versatile configurations to meet diverse business needs. The ground floor enhances its appeal with a lobby, restaurant, and adaptable meeting rooms, all contributing to a dynamic and engaging environment for both work and leisure.
