Public Bar
Project's Summary
The Public Bar in Moscow is a captivating example of modern speakeasy culture, embodying the city's growing fascination with secret drinking venues. Tucked away within the inner courtyard of an 18th-century building, this clandestine bar offers an exclusive experience that requires familiarity with the venue to access. The absence of any signage enhances the allure, ensuring that only the initiated can find their way to this hidden gem.
Upon entering, guests descend eight steps, which cleverly double as storage for cocktail ingredients, leading them into a two-room underground bar. The initial impression is one of raw elegance, with concrete surfaces forming a cohesive design element that visually consolidates the space. This choice of material reflects a contemporary approach while paying homage to the building's historical context, making it a perfect blend of old and new.
The first room showcases a striking concrete bar counter complemented by four small tables that are ingeniously mounted into the wall. The ambient lighting dances off the mirror and brass-bottle shelves adorning the walls, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. Unique touches, such as table legs reminiscent of Postmodern sculptures and geometrically patterned 19th-century French tiles, add character and intrigue to the minimalist design. Collaborating with artist Maria Fedorova, the bar features thoughtfully designed elements like hangers, ashtrays, and a stunning brass lamp that collectively enhance the bar's aesthetic.
In contrast, the second room offers a more communal experience, centered around a large table illuminated by a handmade lamp. The backdrop of exposed bricks and concrete adds to the rustic charm, inviting patrons to relax and enjoy their cocktails in a social setting. A distinctive concrete 'cup' element, which covers one third of the wall, frames the space, adding depth and interest to the minimalist decor. This innovative design not only emphasizes the bar's unique character but also fosters a sense of community among its guests.
Overall, the Public Bar stands as a testament to the creativity and ingenuity found in modern bar design. With its secretive entrance, meticulously crafted interior, and a focus on artisanal details, it promises a memorable experience for those lucky enough to discover it. The blend of historical elements with contemporary aesthetics makes this venue a must-visit for both locals and tourists seeking to indulge in Moscow's vibrant nightlife.
