Project's Summary

Finding a Strong Identity for HKCCSA was our primary design objective - celebrating its past and anticipating an energetic and jovial future. Our design aimed to symbolically blend the Past and Future of HKCCSA, achieved through the pixelated façade representing the future, while preserving the existing façade symbolizing the past. We also incorporated sustainable building and phasing strategies, maximizing revenue, management and operational efficiencies, as well as environmental green building features.

The integration of natural ventilated open spaces, sun shading screens, a green roof, and landscaped features reflected our commitment to environmental sustainability. Furthermore, we established a physical connection by introducing an internal street for art-making and public expression. This street not only provided a functional and harmonious connection to the neighborhood but also acted as a platform for community artwork, exhibitions, and social programs. To further enhance the sense of community, a 'Wall of Fame' was created, showcasing the achievements of both the public and members.

Our design aimed to create a narrative of continuity, celebrating the past while embracing a new vision with sustainability in mind. By housing different programs harmoniously within one closely-knitted social building, we sought to emphasize the value of community. The central entrance, heavily used at present, would be expanded to become an internal street, encouraging public and member interaction. This physical and virtual social network would regenerate new visions for the city, benefitting both the HKCCSA and the external society.

Taking a multi-disciplinary approach, we not only focused on deriving the right design but also ensured the complete plan was executed effectively. This involved considering a business model, operations, and marketing strategies. Our aim was to create a self-sustaining ecosystem, similar to a self-marketed media-landscape, that brought together the internal and external community. This dynamic network would allow for flexibility and growth, benefiting both the HKCCSA and the larger society.

Overall, our HKCCSA Shortlisted Competition Entry project, created by the WKDA architectural studio, aimed to establish a strong identity for HKCCSA by celebrating its past, embracing the future, and promoting sustainability. Through a thoughtful blend of architecture, community engagement, and sustainable design elements, we sought to create a space that would inspire and connect people, fostering a sense of belonging and pride in the community.
