Sustainable and Budget-Friendly Moose Road Residence Design
Project's Summary
Moose Road Residence: A Sustainable and Budget-Friendly Home Creation
The Mork Ulnes Architects architectural studio has done it again with their latest project, the Moose Road Residence. Located in California, this sustainable and budget-friendly home was designed to showcase three locally known land formations – Eagle Rock, a mountain ridge, and a valley of vineyards. The challenge was to frame these views while preserving each existing oak tree on site, which the team accomplished by constructing the house on steel stilts to avoid severing tree roots.
A Design Team Committed to Sustainability
The Moose Road Residence was designed with sustainability in mind, and the design team of Grygoriy Ladigin, Casper Mork-Ulnes, and Andreas Tingulstad did not disappoint. The building was created using standard-sized, off-the-shelf sheet-goods, such as unfinished plywood and OSB, to minimize waste and cut costs. This approach helped the team achieve their sustainability goals while also meeting the clients' budgetary requirements.
A Building that Blends with Nature
The Moose Road Residence is a building that blends with nature, rather than standing out from it. The design team accomplished this by creating three fingers that extend precisely between the existing trees, each oriented toward a specific land formation. The result is a home that feels like it belongs in the landscape, rather than one that was built there.
A Home that Accomplishes Much with a Small Budget
One of the most impressive aspects of the Moose Road Residence is that it was accomplished on a tiny budget of under $190 per square foot. This was possible thanks to the team's commitment to sustainability and their use of standard-sized, off-the-shelf materials. The result is a home that looks and feels luxurious, but that was created in a way that is both budget-friendly and environmentally responsible.
In conclusion, the Moose Road Residence is a testament to the Mork Ulnes Architects' ability to create sustainable, budget-friendly homes that blend with nature. With its commitment to preserving existing oak trees, use of standard-sized materials, and emphasis on blending with the landscape, this home is a model for sustainable architecture.
