Innovative and Sustainable Design: MBS International Airport's New Terminal Transformation
Project's Summary
The MBS International Airport, located in the cities of Midland, Bay City, and Saginaw, Michigan, is set to undergo a major transformation with the selection of RS&H as the architect for a new replacement terminal. This collaborative effort by the three cities aims to meet the future needs of the community and enhance the airport's functionality. The new terminal, spanning 75,000 square feet, will be a single-level passenger building featuring six gates and four passenger boarding bridges. With an overall cost of $48.8 million, this project promises to bring about a range of improvements.
The architectural design of the replacement terminal is truly innovative. It comprises a system of repetitive wave-like building modules that not only create a visually striking structure but also allow for the infusion of natural light through clerestories. This design element brings the beauty of the northern light into the interior, creating a welcoming and bright atmosphere for travelers. Moreover, the interior functions have been strategically designed as flexible modules, enabling future modifications and adaptations to meet the ever-evolving needs of modern airport terminals.
Sustainability is a key aspect of the design, with energy-efficient systems and ample natural light being incorporated to reduce the environmental impact of the facility. The focus on customer convenience is another crucial consideration. The design team has developed a one-story floor plan, eliminating the need for stairs, elevators, and escalators. This ensures a seamless and hassle-free experience for passengers, making their journey through the airport more convenient and efficient.
The new terminal's roof design is particularly noteworthy, as it showcases the integration of building systems and structural expression. This design feature not only adds to the overall aesthetic appeal but also pays homage to the innovation and technological growth that define the communities served by the airport. Against the backdrop of the Michigan sky, the roof's distinctive profile and silhouette create a striking visual impact, further enhancing the airport's identity and sense of place.
Recognizing the remarkable efforts put into this project, the Michigan Department of Transportation's Office of Aeronautics named MBS International Airport the Michigan Airport of the Year in 2013. This prestigious accolade serves as a testament to the dedication and vision of the project team, who have worked tirelessly to create a state-of-the-art terminal that will shape the future of air travel in the region. With its flexible design, sustainable features, and commitment to customer convenience, the new terminal promises to meet the needs of the community while embracing the growth and progress of this vibrant region.
