Linden Hills Lofts: A Smart and Sustainable Solution for Aging Families

Linden Hills is a bustling neighborhood in Minneapolis that offers a variety of amenities, including shopping areas, lakes, single-family homes, and high-density apartment buildings. However, finding suitable housing for aging families is a challenge. Responding to this pressing need, Snow Kreilich Architects designed Linden Hills Lofts, a small-scale residential development that replaces three dilapidated buildings on a pie-shaped lot.

The four-story building features below-grade parking and elevator service to three private flats, providing smart density that reinforces the character of the neighborhood. The project supports the city-wide goal of adding density while creating sustainable and livable spaces for residents. The building's massing and materiality reflect its location at the transition between the high and low-density residential districts.

The architects' design approach is a modern interpretation of the lap siding and trim found on the bungalow homes of the neighborhood. The floor-to-ceiling windows are a nod to the scale of the surrounding apartment buildings. The stained cedar siding and black accent panels give the building a contemporary aesthetic that blends seamlessly with the neighborhood's character.
