Project's Summary

The library is conveniently situated in Hanoi's charming French Quarter, housed within a building that boasts a remarkable history of over a century. This architectural gem has been recognized for its heritage conservation value, making it a significant landmark in the city.

When it comes to renovating historic buildings, there are typically two approaches that can be taken. The first approach involves minimal alterations to the external facade and main structure, preserving the original charm and character. The second approach, on the other hand, seeks to create new value by making selective but effective changes to the exterior and structure. Due to strict heritage regulations, the library project opted for the former approach, ensuring that the renovations paid homage to the building's historical significance.

Prior to the renovation, the library room consisted of bookshelves, chairs, and tables placed on the floor. Additionally, the small openings in the brick masonry structure created a somewhat closed-off atmosphere. To address these limitations, the design team decided to open up the library room, connecting it with the internal space of the cultural center. The first step towards achieving this was to cover the walls entirely with bookshelves, extending this design seamlessly across the ceiling. The aim was to create an immersive experience, where visitors would feel surrounded by bookshelves and enveloped in books.

As part of the library's expansion plans, the collection of books is set to double over the next five years. This growth will also entail the gradual replacement of existing books. Consequently, the internal facade of the library will undergo changes over time, adapting to the evolving collection. It is hoped that these transformations will bring joy and excitement to visitors, as they discover new literary treasures and witness the ongoing evolution of this remarkable space.

In summary, the library project in Hanoi's French Quarter showcases a commitment to heritage preservation while embracing the need for modernization. By adhering to heritage regulations and maintaining the integrity of the building's exterior, the renovations have successfully transformed the library into a captivating space. The incorporation of extensive bookshelves has created an inviting atmosphere, ensuring that visitors are immersed in a world of knowledge and inspiration. As the collection grows and evolves, the internal facade will continue to change, offering a dynamic and ever-evolving experience for all who enter this remarkable library.
