Iskra Cafe - A Sparkling Experience in Moscow
Project's Summary
Iskra Cafe, located in the vibrant heart of Moscow's Kitai-Gorod, is a double-leveled café and bar that redefines the dining experience with its unique design and exceptional offerings. The venue, designed by a talented team including Ksenia Vasilieva, Natalia Mastalerzh, Ilona Povilenayte, Daria Sutormina, and Nata Tatunashvili, serves a delightful menu featuring grilled chicken and an extensive selection of sparkling wines. Housed in a classicist building dating back to the late XVIII century, Iskra Cafe beautifully marries history with modern dining culture.

The building, once a private residence of a noble Moscow family, has been thoughtfully transformed. After its nationalization by the Soviet government, the space previously used as a dairy shop has evolved into a light-filled café featuring a spacious upper level and a hidden bar known as the 'Public Bar' in the basement. This clever adaptation showcases the potential of historic spaces to evolve while retaining their charm, making Iskra Cafe a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.

At the core of Iskra's design philosophy is the concept of 'genuinely Moscow' interiors that contrast sharply with the generic aesthetics found in many contemporary venues. The design team sought to create an environment that is both authentic and imaginative, utilizing a palette of native colors—green, red, and gray—and materials such as brick, concrete, and marble. These elements work together to evoke the spirit of Moscow, drawing inspiration from the city’s rich architectural heritage and the iconic underground marble of the Moscow metro.

The interior of Iskra Cafe is both spacious and inviting, featuring an open kitchen that encourages transparency and interaction. A striking brass hearth serves as a focal point, while the parquet-like marble pattern on the bar counter and floor adds an elegant touch. The carefully selected pinkwood furniture, characterized by its light and tall design, ensures the space feels airy and uncluttered. A massive window bathes the café in natural light, offering guests a panoramic view of the bustling street outside, enhancing the overall experience.

As the sun sets, the ambiance transforms with a glowing sign that doubles as a lamp, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for evening patrons. Iskra Cafe stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of history, design, and culinary excellence, inviting guests to indulge in a unique dining experience that resonates with the essence of Moscow.
