High Prairie Residence - A Serene Getaway in Washington
Project's Summary
The High Prairie Residence, designed by eb architecture + design, stands as an exemplary model of simplicity and durability in architectural design. Nestled in the picturesque rural community of High Prairie, Lyle, Washington, this modest getaway residence is an architectural gem that harmonizes beautifully with its stunning natural surroundings. Set against a dramatic backdrop, the residence occupies a gentle hillside approximately 15 miles north of the Columbia Gorge, providing an idyllic retreat that respects the vastness of its 120-acre landscape.

Upon entering the High Prairie Residence, visitors are enveloped in a sense of tranquility that permeates the design. Strategically located at the edge of the property’s own oak forest, the house takes advantage of the natural topography, using the trees and hillside to shield against the often-harsh winds and weather conditions typical of the area. The design philosophy emphasizes a connection with the outdoors, as every element— from the siting of the structure to the geometry of the rooms— is thoughtfully orchestrated to frame breathtaking views of the distant volcanic peaks of the Cascade Range. This approach ensures that the residence not only provides comfort but also amplifies the beauty of its setting.

A standout feature of the High Prairie Residence is its innovative use of space and materials to define public and private areas. The central site-cast concrete wall serves as a defining element in this modest two-bar plan, creating a clear distinction between communal and private spaces. On one side, the master suite gracefully steps down from the main level, conforming to the existing topography to establish a serene sanctuary complete with panoramic windows that invite natural light and picturesque views. Meanwhile, the opposite side houses two guest bedrooms and a shared bath, seamlessly nestled into the hillside, creating a self-contained suite that enhances both privacy and accessibility.

The exterior of the High Prairie Residence is clad in ground face concrete masonry units (CMU) and topped with a weathering steel roof, a design choice that not only resonates with the agricultural vernacular of the region but also addresses the clients' desires for durability and minimal maintenance. This thoughtful selection of materials ensures that the residence can withstand the test of time and the elements, while still looking visually striking against the landscape. Additionally, two site walls extend from the southwestern face of the house, anchoring the structure within the landscape and providing further protection from prevailing winds, thus ensuring a comfortable living environment year-round.

In summary, the High Prairie Residence is a remarkable testament to the power of thoughtful architectural design that prioritizes simplicity, durability, and a deep respect for the natural environment. By celebrating the beauty of the landscape and integrating seamlessly into its surroundings, this residence exemplifies how architecture can create serene living spaces that enhance the quality of life for its inhabitants. The design not only meets the functional needs of its occupants but also resonates with the natural drama of its environment, making it a perfect retreat for those seeking solace in nature.
