Project's Summary

The Glowbox Guesthouse, affectionately named for its abundant glazing and warm wood interior, is a remarkable addition to the Historic Woodland Heights of Houston. Designed by the renowned Bruce Roadcap Architecture architectural studio, this small detached music studio and guest house seamlessly integrates with a previously renovated craftsman bungalow.

With its high ceilings and large overhangs, the Glowbox offers enchanting views of the surrounding trees and welcomes filtered natural light, creating a cozy urban retreat. One of the standout features of the Glowbox is its exposed glulam structural beams, which not only support the vaulted roof but also allow for continuous clerestory windows.

These windows not only add to the aesthetic appeal of the space but also ensure a steady flow of natural light throughout. To further enhance the charm of the interior, the architects opted to recycle old wormy shiplap from the original garage, adorning the ceiling and shed interior with this reclaimed material.

Functionality was also a key consideration in the design of the Glowbox. The main interior wall features built-in storage that runs the full length of the space, providing ample room to store personal belongings. Additionally, a space-saving ships ladder has been cleverly incorporated within a cabinet, ensuring safety while providing access to the storage loft above.

To combat the sweltering Houston climate, the Glowbox boasts a rich portland concrete floor, which not only adds a touch of elegance but also keeps the interior cool. The large glass doors that open onto the courtyard and back deck on two sides not only create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow but also offer the perfect setting for entertaining and hosting intimate music events.
