Forest Eco-Cottage: Harmonizing Modern Design & Nature
Project's Summary
Hidden amidst the untamed wilderness on the outskirts of Sri Lanka's central province lies a remarkable modern interpretation of an Eco-Cottage. This lightweight timber structure, consisting of two living levels, occupies a mere 500 square feet of land. Raised above ground level and supported by stilts, this innovative design minimizes disruption to the surrounding fauna and flora. Access to the cottage is granted via a suspended timber bridge, offering a breathtaking view of the lush greenery below.
While an H-iron framework forms the foundation of the cottage's structure, the finishes exude an earthy charm. Timber flooring, cladded ceilings and trellis, feature rock walls, and a hay-thatched roof contribute to the cottage's rustic appeal. The ground level hosts the bedroom and an open washroom, providing an immersive experience for guests who can admire the delicate living things that thrive in the natural ground cover. The use of sheer glass surrounding the bedroom amplifies the feeling of living harmoniously with nature, while still enjoying the luxuries of indoor living.
The upper deck level houses the living and dining spaces, sheltered by the steep-set roof that extends protectively over the area. These spaces seamlessly blend with the natural surroundings, offering unobstructed views and a minimal handrail that demarcates the boundary between indoor and outdoor living. To preserve the serenity of the environment, floor lanterns crafted from pale cloth gently illuminate the cottage, ensuring minimal disturbance to the surroundings.
The Forest Eco-Cottage project, created by the a-designstudio architectural studio, showcases a remarkable fusion of modern design and ecological sensitivity. By harmonizing with nature and minimizing its ecological impact, this cottage offers a unique opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of Sri Lanka's wilderness. It serves as a reminder that sustainable architecture can coexist harmoniously with the environment, providing a haven where one can escape the chaos of modern life and reconnect with the serene tranquility of nature.
