Project's Summary

FILANDÓN RESTAURANT, designed by ISABELLOPEZVILALTA+ASSOCIATES, is a stunning architectural achievement located on the outskirts of Madrid. This contemporary space marries rustic touches with modern design, creating a unique atmosphere perfect for enjoying high-quality culinary offerings. The careful selection of traditional materials such as clay, granite, and wood not only pays homage to Spanish heritage but also establishes an inviting environment that resonates with both locals and visitors alike.

The restaurant's name is inspired by the Cantabrian-Galician tradition of 'Filandón,' where women would gather to spin wool and chat, fostering a sense of community. This cultural reference is a testament to the project's emphasis on connection and warmth. The architectural layout consists of three interconnected buildings, arranged around a central courtyard that serves as the heart of the establishment, allowing for a fluid transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The first building, predominantly constructed from granite and wood, features a robust structure supported by trusses that evoke the traditional 'teito' buildings of northern Cantabria. These structures, historically used for storage and protection, inform the aesthetic of the restaurant while ensuring durability and functionality. The inviting design invites guests to step inside and experience a warm, rustic atmosphere that is both comforting and elegant.

A second building showcases a series of buttresses that create distinct environments within the expansive space, with sliding doors that open up to accommodate a variety of events. The use of granite and clay continues throughout this structure, reinforcing the rustic theme while the zinc roof nods to the region's palatial architectural history. This thoughtful design approach ensures that each area of the restaurant can be utilized effectively, catering to different occasions and gatherings.

Finally, the third block represents a contemporary interpretation of traditional materials, featuring natural wood and terracotta flooring that enhances the overall warmth of the setting. Large windows and expansive terraces blur the lines between the interior and exterior, inviting the surrounding landscape into the dining experience. The FILANDÓN RESTAURANT is not just a place to eat; it is a celebration of architectural innovation that respects the past while looking towards the future.
