Dunn Motors Building - Mixed-Use Development in Seattle
Project's Summary
The Dunn Motors Building stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of history and modern architecture. Located at 501 East Pike Street in Seattle's vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood, this remarkable 8-story mixed-use development showcases the collaborative efforts of Studio Meng Strazzara and Hunters Capital. The project ingeniously preserves the original two-story façade of the historic 1925 building while expanding its footprint to accommodate 89 contemporary housing units, 7,000 square feet of retail space, and 5,000 square feet of office space.

In reimagining the Dunn Motors Building, the architectural team focused on retaining the character of the original structure. The cast stone façade, adorned with classical ornamentation, has been thoughtfully adapted and reused, particularly at the commercial street level and the second-floor office spaces overlooking East Pike. This careful preservation not only honors the building's history but also enriches the commercial ambiance of the area, creating a welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.

To ensure a seamless integration of the old and the new, Studio Meng Strazzara employed new cast stone cladding that complements the historic base of the building. This design approach fosters a sense of continuity with the surrounding Capitol Hill neighborhood. Further elevating the aesthetic appeal are the newly landscaped areas and enhanced paving that beautify the sidewalks, while balconies and garden terraces provide individual units with private outdoor spaces, creating a sense of community among residents.

A standout feature of the Dunn Motors Building is the stunning rooftop terrace, which provides residents with panoramic views of downtown Seattle. This communal space is thoughtfully designed with BBQ facilities, lush gardens, and comfortable seating, offering a serene escape amidst the urban landscape. It serves as a perfect gathering spot for residents to enjoy the outdoors, socialize, and appreciate the beautiful city skyline.

The collaboration between Studio Meng Strazzara and Hunters Capital has resulted in a remarkable mixed-use development that not only respects the historical significance of the original building but also enhances the Capitol Hill neighborhood's appeal. The project embodies a commitment to thoughtful design, sustainability, and community engagement, making the Dunn Motors Building a true architectural gem in Seattle's thriving landscape.
