Connecting Cuexcomatitlan: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture, Nature, and Art
Project's Summary
Cuexcomatitlan, a quaint town nestled along the shores of Cajititlan Lake in Tlajomulco de Zuñiga, Jalisco, is steeped in history. With its 1751 convent building and adjacent 1750 church, it stands as one of the oldest settlements in the area. However, there has always been something missing - a connection between the town and the lake. Thankfully, a visionary architectural project by Agraz Arquitectos S.C. is set to rectify this, providing an opportunity to bring the houses closer to the water by creating a stunning public space.
This project serves a dual purpose, not only bridging the gap between Cuexcomatitlan and the lake but also serving as a departure and destination point for boats and ferries traveling between Cuexcomatitlan and the Pier of Cajititlan. Designed by the same architectural firm, the project seamlessly integrates with the existing pier. A public square, complete with a boardwalk and a wall of trees, takes center stage, creating a harmonious blend of nature and architecture. To offer respite from the sun, a beautifully crafted trellis provides much-needed shade for visitors looking to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Drawing inspiration from the local heritage, the material selection for the project pays homage to the Cajititlan Pier while still maintaining its own unique personality. The stone walls are adorned with a volcanic stone border, distinguishing it from its neighboring structures. Additionally, Adrian Guerrero, an artist, contributed to the project by introducing a series of rock spheres. These geometric shapes not only reference the early constructions of the area but also serve as a tribute to the Prehispanic pots found abundantly in Tlajomulco de Zuñiga. Placed playfully throughout the plaza, these quarry balls emerge from the ground, adding an artistic touch to the overall design.
The Cuexcomatitlan Pier project perfectly encapsulates the harmonious relationship between architecture, nature, and art. It not only allows the town to finally meet the water but also provides its citizens with a space for enjoyment and leisure. This integration of elements creates an atmosphere that is both inviting and captivating. As visitors stroll along the boardwalk, take in the breathtaking views, and find solace under the trellis, they will truly understand the vision behind this remarkable project. Cuexcomatitlan has been transformed into a place where the beauty of the lake and the charm of the town converge, offering an experience that is bound to leave a lasting impression.
