Project's Summary

The Children's Zoo at the Moscow Zoo, masterfully designed by Wowhaus, represents a groundbreaking approach to integrating play, education, and animal interaction within an urban environment. This innovative space reimagines how young visitors engage with wildlife, creating a harmonious blend where children, adults, and animals coexist as equal participants. By transforming one of the least visited areas of the zoo, Wowhaus has established a vibrant environment that encourages exploration and learning through direct interaction with animals in a natural setting.

The primary objective behind the redesign was to breathe new life into a previously barren area of the zoo, providing a comfortable habitat for animals while facilitating diverse programs for children of all ages. Emphasizing the importance of nature preservation, the new Children's Zoo encompasses interactive, play-based educational facilities that inspire curiosity. Visitors are invited to view the zoo not merely as a place of entertainment but as a dynamic learning environment where animals and children can engage, explore, and learn from one another.

The Moscow Zoo, one of Europe's oldest, faces unique challenges due to its central urban location, which limits opportunities for physical expansion. However, the potential to enhance the existing space through thoughtful design is immense. The previous offerings for young visitors relied heavily on fairy-tale themes that often overshadowed the animals themselves. Recognizing the need for a fresh direction, Wowhaus collaborated closely with zoo specialists, sociologists, and biologists to create a vision that prioritizes education and socialization for children during their visits.

In this innovative space, traditional cages are replaced with open areas that allow animals to exhibit more natural behaviors while providing children with opportunities for hands-on experiences. The layout features multiple routes, catering to varying levels of engagement. Brief visits allow guests to observe animals from a distance, while longer experiences invite direct interaction, fostering a deeper connection between children and their surroundings. Play areas are thoughtfully integrated into each zone, encouraging children to learn through imaginative play, as they crawl into nests or navigate tunnels designed to mimic animal habitats.

The Children's Zoo features distinct areas, including a 'Farm' with familiar domestic animals, a forest zone with an aviary tunnel, and a 'Rabbit City.' Each section is designed to engage visitors while offering educational opportunities. The central pavilion, vibrant in yellow, serves as a focal point, enhancing the overall experience with its inviting atmosphere. Even in winter, the zoo remains a hub of activity, showcasing resilient species and continuing its mission of education and engagement. This reimagined Children's Zoo is not just a place to observe animals; it is a transformative space that nurtures curiosity, learning, and respect for nature.
