Brook Bay Residence: Craftsmanship, Materiality, and Seamless Connection to Nature
Project's Summary
Nestled into the hillside of Mercer Island, the Brook Bay project stands as an intimate two-story residence that beautifully showcases craftsmanship, materiality, and its seamless connection to the outdoors. The design and choice of materials cleverly delineate public and private spaces, with the entertaining areas enveloped in copper panels, blackened steel, and concrete, while the private master suite exudes a more intimate atmosphere with its exterior wood siding and interior wood floors, lower ceiling height, and light-colored walls. By strategically placing the main sleeping and living areas on the upper floors, the home maximizes its breathtaking views of Lake Washington and Seward Park, while the ground level below houses the support spaces.
Renowned architect Rick Sundberg collaborated closely with local craftspeople to bring the Brook Bay project to life, resulting in an array of captivating details that truly enhance the residence. Among these remarkable features are the entry and interior doors, exquisitely designed to create a lasting first impression. The blackened steel staircase not only serves as a functional element but also adds an element of visual interest and sophistication to the home. A striking glass and metal chandelier gracefully illuminates the space, further enhancing its unique character.
Interior copper panels contribute to the home's distinctive charm, seamlessly blending with the overall design aesthetic. The dining area boasts a one-of-a-kind table created from a harmonious combination of wood, steel, and concrete, serving as a functional centerpiece that reflects the meticulous craftsmanship present throughout the residence.
The Brook Bay project by Sundberg Kennedy Ly-Au Young Architects is a testament to their ability to create a home that seamlessly merges with its natural surroundings. The careful selection of materials, attention to detail, and collaboration with local artisans have resulted in a residence that not only prioritizes functionality but also captures the essence of its picturesque location. This intimate two-story abode serves as a sanctuary, allowing its inhabitants to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors while reveling in the comfort and elegance of their private sanctuary.
