Project's Summary

The Basket Apartments project, conceived by OFIS architects, stands as a pioneering example of modern student housing in the vibrant 19th district of Paris. Nestled along the edge of Parc La Villette, this architectural marvel occupies a uniquely long and narrow site, measuring just 11 meters in width and extending approximately 200 meters in length. The strategic positioning adjacent to the new Paris tram route enhances accessibility and connects students to the city's dynamic urban fabric. This urban context not only defines the project's architectural language but also harmonizes with the existing urban development initiated by renowned architects Reichen & Robert.

The design philosophy behind the Basket Apartments centers on creating a nurturing environment for students. With a total of 192 studios spread across 11 floors, the layout is meticulously planned to foster community interaction while ensuring privacy. Each studio is equipped with essential amenities including an entrance, bathroom, kitchenette, and workspace, all within a compact yet functional design. The integration of communal spaces, such as the open corridor overlooking the football field, encourages social engagement and provides stunning views of the cityscape, including the iconic Eiffel Tower. This approach not only enhances the living experience but also promotes a sense of belonging among residents.

Architecturally, the project features two distinct volumes connected by a narrow bridge, which serves as a vibrant communal space for students. The façade facing the street des Petits Ponts is adorned with studio balconies, referred to as 'baskets,' constructed from high-pressure laminate timber stripes. These balconies are intentionally oriented to create a dynamic rhythm across the façade, offering varied perspectives and breaking down the building's scale. Conversely, the elevation facing the football field is characterized by an open passageway, allowing for easy access while maintaining an inviting atmosphere. The innovative use of materials, including concrete, glass, and metal, showcases a modern aesthetic while ensuring durability and functionality.
