Project's Summary

Backbone Village Houses, a visionary project by OFIS architects, represents a remarkable fusion of modern architecture and sustainable living, nestled in the picturesque suburb of Podpeč, Slovenia. Initiated in 2006 and completed in 2010, this project aims to redefine suburban living by seamlessly integrating urban and rural environments. The design philosophy emphasizes the importance of preserving historical rural typologies while catering to the needs of contemporary families seeking affordable housing options in proximity to nature.

The project's concept revolves around the idea of condensing village cores, drawing inspiration from traditional rural layouts characterized by longitudinal buildings arranged along roads. This design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the area but also fosters a sense of community among residents. The internal road serves as the backbone of the development, with eight thoughtfully designed plots branching out like ribs, promoting a harmonious blend of private and communal spaces.

With a focus on sustainable and economical living, Backbone Village Houses are tailored for young families who aspire to own a home with a garden without the financial burden often associated with urban living. Each house, priced between 140,000 and 160,000 EUR, is designed to be affordable yet functional, allowing families to thrive in a vibrant community. The two-story layout of each unit, spanning 110sqm, features a central living area that opens to an elevated veranda and a small inner garden, creating an inviting space for relaxation and socialization.

The first floor of each house is dedicated to personal space, featuring three bedrooms and two bathrooms, along with a wardrobe for added convenience. A long terrace with a pergola extends along the bedrooms, providing an ideal outdoor retreat. The pitched roof design adds an element of versatility, offering potential for a gallery or additional storage space. The use of high-quality materials such as larch wood, plaster, and glass not only enhances the aesthetic quality of the houses but also ensures durability and sustainability.

Backbone Village Houses stand as a testament to the potential of modern architecture to create sustainable living environments that respect historical contexts while meeting contemporary needs. This project not only revitalizes the suburban area of Podpeč but also encourages a lifestyle that embraces nature, community, and affordability, making it an exemplary model for future developments in similar contexts.
