Multifunctional Complex "City of Capitals"
Project's Summary
The City of Capitals is a remarkable embodiment of modern architecture nestled in the bustling core of Moscow, Russia. This multifunctional complex is a testament to contemporary urban design, featuring two iconic towers aptly named Moscow and St. Petersburg. These towers rest on a shared podium, sprawling across a picturesque 1.27-hectare expanse along the Presnenskaya Embankment, a scenic waterfront that adds to the grandeur of the complex. The design, marked by a series of irregularly stacked cubes and dramatic overhangs, draws the eye and captivates both locals and tourists, establishing itself as a landmark of modern urbanism and architectural innovation.
Construction of this architectural marvel commenced in 2003, led by the visionary Capital Group, with Ant Yapı Sanayi ve Ticaret Anonim Şirketi serving as the developer. However, the journey was not without its challenges. Initial progress was stymied by design alterations and the sweeping effects of the global financial crisis, which temporarily halted the project until 2005. The definitive architectural vision was eventually realized by the esteemed American firm NBBJ, under the creative leadership of renowned architect Erik van Egeraat. This design not only symbolizes the cultural significance of Russia's two largest cities but also reflects a commitment to architectural excellence, culminating in the complex's completion in 2009.
The City of Capitals is distinguished by its architectural features, which are nothing short of awe-inspiring. The complex boasts the towering 76-story Moscow building, reaching an impressive height of 302 meters, accompanied by the 65-story St. Petersburg tower, standing at 257 meters. These majestic towers rise above a thoughtfully designed 17-story podium that houses both Northern and Southern blocks. The mirrored glass façades of the towers enhance energy efficiency and flood the interiors with natural light, making the complex a model for sustainable architecture. The integration of 50 high-speed elevators and 6 escalators ensures efficient vertical transportation, providing residents and visitors with a seamless experience.
Beyond its architectural brilliance, the City of Capitals serves as a hub of amenities and infrastructure, solidifying its status as a prime destination within the Moscow International Business Center (MIBC). The complex offers an extensive range of facilities, including 80,000 square meters of premium office space and 101,000 square meters of opulent residential apartments, categorized into DeLuxe, Superior, Grand, Executive, and President levels. Residents and visitors alike can indulge in a variety of amenities, including upscale shops, gourmet restaurants, state-of-the-art fitness centers, and luxurious wellness facilities. Additionally, a six-level underground parking structure provides ample space for over 2,200 vehicles, ensuring convenience and comfort for all.
The City of Capitals has earned global recognition, garnering numerous awards and accolades that underscore its status as a landmark of architectural excellence. The Moscow tower was hailed as one of the top ten skyscrapers worldwide by Emporis Standards in 2010, and the complex claimed first place in the European skyscraper popularity contest conducted by SkyscraperCity in 2012. This innovative design and comprehensive infrastructure stand as a testament to Russia's architectural prowess and dedication to creating vibrant urban spaces that foster community and collaboration. Interestingly, Moscow's rich cultural tapestry has attracted many notable figures throughout history, including the renowned novelist Leo Tolstoy, whose legacy continues to inspire and influence the cultural landscape of this magnificent city.
