Clayco/LJC's Design-Build Expertise: SCAD Victory Project
Project's Summary
Clayco / LJC's Design-Build Expertise on Display in SCAD Victory Project
The SCAD Victory Village Student Housing Project is a testament to the design-build resources of Clayco / LJC. This is the fourth project that Clayco has undertaken with SCAD, and the third for LJC + Clayco. The project involved the construction of a 650-bed Suite style Residential Hall in Savannah's Historic Streetcar District. The project was completed within a fast-paced schedule without compromising the quality of the design.
The project was designed to include a mix of 4-bed and 2-bed suites with kitchenettes, along with studio spaces, totaling approximately 250,000 square feet of living space. The units were a new product type for SCAD, having a ratio of 173 gross square feet per person. This size became critical during the Covid-19 pandemic. The program also included outdoor amenities and common support spaces, such as lounges per floor, laundry rooms, study rooms, art studios at the street level, computer labs, and resident life offices.
The exterior composition of both buildings was designed to exceed the certificate of appropriateness within Savannah by focusing on scale and façade detailing. The team broke down the mass of these 4 and 5 story buildings and complemented the surrounding residential houses while fitting into the neighborhood with grace. The design was necessary within the context of the historic district.
