Renovation of Zaraysk's Historical Centre

The Renovation of the Historical Centre of Zaraysk represents a significant achievement in urban design, masterfully merging contemporary aesthetics with the rich cultural heritage of this ancient city. Undertaken by the Basis architectural bureau, this project not only revitalizes the public spaces but also enhances the historical significance of Zaraysk, making it a compelling destination for both residents and tourists alike. The project was recognized for its excellence, winning the 2018 All-Russia competition for the best urban environment developments in small cities and historical settlements.

Zaraysk, known for its charming wooden merchant estates from the 19th century, is steeped in history, having been home to notable figures such as governor Pozharsky and writers like Feodor Dostoevsky. The renovation project has respected and highlighted this historical context, preserving the essence of the city while integrating modern conveniences. The historical center is transformed into a vibrant pedestrian and tourist hub, featuring newly designed attractions that celebrate the city's unique character and architectural heritage.

Central to the project is the iconic brick water tower, which serves as a focal point for the area. Surrounding this landmark, contrasting materials such as white marble chips and red paving create an inviting atmosphere, guiding visitors from the road to the tower. The project also prioritizes sustainability and accessibility, with landscaping that preserves existing mature trees and includes new plantings that enhance the urban ecology.
