Project's Summary

The Reconstruction of the Attic of the Building of the Plant Control represents a significant architectural endeavor by ArchiLEM, aimed at revitalizing a historic structure in St. Petersburg. This three-story building, characterized by its gable roof and brick walls, underwent a thoughtful redesign in 1997 to accommodate modern office needs while preserving its unique architectural features. The project sought to maximize space efficiency and aesthetic appeal, transforming the attic into a functional work environment.

At the heart of the project lies the innovative design of the interior spaces. The vertical ladder strategically located near the entrance connects the different levels of the building, allowing for easy access to the newly designed offices. The architectural layout of the attic includes several offices for employees and executive offices, all designed with a focus on natural light and open communication. The second light illuminated hallway, which leads to an external evacuation staircase, enhances the building's safety and accessibility.

The design incorporates unique architectural elements, such as varying roof heights that create a dynamic visual experience. This wave-like structure not only enhances the aesthetic quality of the building but also allows for the placement of windows that provide ample daylight to the interior spaces. The southeastern-facing offices feature an inclined glazing tape that extends from the floor to the roof, providing stunning views of the surroundings while minimizing direct sunlight penetration.

Constructed using arcuate glued wooden beams, the roof design stands out as an exemplary feature of modern architecture. The use of shingles as the roofing material complements the overall design, ensuring durability and weather resistance. This thoughtful combination of materials and design elements results in a harmonious blend of functionality and style, making the reconstructed attic a desirable workspace for its occupants.

Overall, the project exemplifies ArchiLEM's commitment to innovative design and thoughtful reconstruction. By transforming the attic of the plant control building, the project not only enhances the usability of the space but also contributes to the architectural landscape of St. Petersburg. The meticulous attention to detail and the integration of modern office needs within a historic framework highlight the importance of adaptive reuse in contemporary architecture.
