Project's Summary

The Public Media Commons, designed by Cobalt Office, represents a groundbreaking vision for public space in the Grand Center Arts District of St. Louis. This expansive 15,000 square foot media-rich plaza and outdoor studio serves as a vibrant intersection of local Public Television (KETC), Radio (KWMU), and the arts, fostering a unique synergy between community engagement and media expression. The Commons is not just a physical space; it is a hub for creativity and collaboration, inviting residents and visitors alike to partake in the cultural richness of the area.

At the heart of the design is the innovative use of white perforated panels that adorn the existing facades. This treatment, combined with programmable LED uplighting, creates a striking 'white room' aesthetic. The panels facilitate a dynamic environment for large-format projections and LED displays, transforming the plaza into a canvas for artistic expression. A prominent feature is the new window into KETC Studio B, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at media production, enriching the visitor experience. Interactive LCD virtual windows further enhance engagement, allowing guests to interact with the content generated within the Commons.

An exciting aspect of the Public Media Commons is the incorporation of perforated QR patterns throughout the space. These innovative designs encourage an interactive relationship between the physical and digital realms, enabling visitors to create and showcase their own content through the interactive QR facade. This element not only adds a layer of interactivity but also helps to establish a unique visual identity for the Commons, ensuring it stands out as a landmark in the Grand Center Arts District.

The plaza features a thoughtfully designed forecourt entry and a spacious central gathering area ideal for hosting events, performances, and community activities. Framing the Commons are two key components: the Broadcast Platform and the Grove. The Broadcast Platform functions as an elevated café terrace and performance stage, providing a venue for events while allowing visitors to peek into Studio B. Meanwhile, the Grove offers a shaded retreat for relaxation. Steps leading toward the Fox Theater integrate comfortable seating options, creating a welcoming environment for spectators and passersby. At the foot of these steps lies the 'whisper gallery,' an enchanting feature that amplifies spoken voices, enhancing the outdoor sound experience.
