Project's Summary

Odette Estate Winery stands as a remarkable achievement in architectural design, crafted by the innovative team at Signum Architecture. This project marks the third property for the Plumpjack Group in the renowned Napa Valley, specifically located in the picturesque Stag's Leap district. This location is celebrated for producing wines that showcase soft and feminine characteristics, contrasting beautifully with the more robust nature of the group's Howell Mountain property. The aim was to create a production winery that not only reflects these delicate qualities but also adheres to high sustainability standards, all while operating within a limited budget, thus presenting a significant challenge for the design team.

Inspired by the essence of femininity, the design process of Odette Estate Winery was deeply influenced by the concept of the "three ladies," a homage to pivotal female characters found in the works of Shakespeare, Proust, and Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake. The architectural narrative began with a sketch resembling an evening gown, which evolved into graceful, swaying forms that are prevalent throughout the winery's design. These forms are encapsulated in the winery's logo, expressed through the patterns on the concrete crush pad, the curves of the roofing, and even represented through three statues placed strategically within the vineyards. Each architectural element is imbued with sinuous curves that reflect the feminine inspiration behind the winery's design, creating a harmonious connection with nature and the art of winemaking.

The commitment to sustainability is evident in the winery's layout, which is ingeniously set into a notch on the hillside behind the existing facilities. The structure features a living roof adorned with 2,500 square feet of solar panels, emphasizing the project's dedication to environmental stewardship. Additionally, three repurposed shipping containers have been cleverly integrated into the design, serving as functional offices and labs within the open-air space. These containers, staggered and painted in a vibrant orange hue, add a touch of modernity while ensuring weather-tight efficiency. Despite its modest size, the winery is prominently visible from the Silverado Trail, allowing it to make a striking impression on visitors.

During the design process, one of the primary challenges faced was the winery's western exposure to sunlight. To combat this issue, Signum Architecture devised a unique perforated screen that is layered with the flowing shapes representing the three ladies. This innovative solution not only protects the winery from excessive sunlight but also enhances its aesthetic appeal, making it a visual landmark in the area. The defining symbol of the winery has become its illuminated screen, which showcases the undulating forms of the three Odettes, creating a captivating sight at night that draws attention from all who pass by.

In conclusion, Signum Architecture's design for Odette Estate Winery is a true testament to the power of architectural creativity and sustainable design. The project successfully marries aesthetic elegance with functionality, utilizing sinuous curves, a living roof, solar energy, and reclaimed materials to craft a stunning and efficient winery. The iconic illuminated screen featuring the three Odettes serves as a fitting centerpiece, ensuring that Odette Estate Winery is not only a remarkable addition to Napa Valley's wine country but also an enduring symbol of innovation and beauty.
