Innovative Design: New Prospect Elementary School Balances Tech & Budget Constraints

New Prospect Elementary School, a project undertaken by the architectural studio HEALY | BENDER, faced the challenge of accommodating increasing enrollment and limited funding. The School District tasked the architectural team with creating a building that could not only cater to current technological needs but also accommodate future technological advancements, all within a tight budget. Remarkably, the project successfully struck a balance between these requirements, delivering a design that aligned with the district's educational delivery model and technology plans while adhering to the referendum budget. Additionally, the design incorporated innovative features focusing on safety and security.

After careful consideration of various site options, the School Board made the decision to construct the new facility on a site already occupied by two other schools. This would make the new school the third one to be built in this location. The chosen site is nestled within an established residential neighborhood, featuring a charming tree-lined street. The new school spans an area of 56,000 square feet and is designed to accommodate 600 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. To maintain harmony with the surrounding residences, the design was developed in a manner that preserved the scale and height of the neighboring houses.

The resulting two-story plan was thoughtfully designed to provide grade-center classroom "houses." This arrangement promotes both privacy and team-oriented instructional planning. These classroom houses are flanked by shared community centers, including the administrative area, multipurpose room/gymnasium, and media (instruction resource) center. By centralizing these facilities, the design enhances accessibility, reduces circulation, and maximizes student supervision.

The multipurpose room/gymnasium is a versatile space designed to accommodate before- and after-school activities. It is conveniently located with direct access to the main entry, allowing for easy entry and exit. Furthermore, the design ensures the necessary separation to enable the use of the space by both the school and community groups without disrupting other areas of the school.
