Project's Summary

Nationwide Children's Hospital, in collaboration with Formation architectural studio, has undertaken an innovative project to humanize the healthcare system in the country. The challenge at hand was to develop a clear wayfinding system and create a positive sense of place for families within the hospital premises. This comprehensive initiative aims to enhance the overall experience of patients and their families by providing visual cues and a welcoming environment.

To address the wayfinding aspect, the project has incorporated a variety of elements that aid navigation throughout the hospital. Colorful walls, oversized signage, and leaf motifs on the floor are strategically placed to guide patients and their families. These visual cues not only make it easier to find their way around the hospital but also create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

In addition to the wayfinding elements, the hospital has introduced environmental graphics that bring a touch of nature into the healthcare setting. Vibrant silhouettes of native Ohio flora and fauna adorn the walls, immersing patients in a natural world within the hospital. This thoughtful integration of nature not only serves as a visual delight but also contributes to a calming and healing environment.

Another notable feature of the project is the easily identified floor pattern that runs throughout the hospital campus. This distinct path, marked with different colors and markers, serves as a guide for patients to find their desired destinations. By implementing such a cohesive and identifiable floor design, patients can navigate the hospital with confidence, reducing stress and improving their overall experience.

The Nationwide Children's Hospital Wayfinding + Experience Design project, brought to life by Formation architectural studio, is a testament to the power of thoughtful design in humanizing the healthcare system. The utilization of colorful wayfinding elements, incorporation of nature-themed graphics, and the implementation of a discernible floor pattern all contribute to creating a positive and welcoming atmosphere for patients and their families. This initiative sets a benchmark for future healthcare design projects, demonstrating the importance of prioritizing the human experience within medical settings.
