MOBY DICK

MOBY DICK, a captivating coffee house project initiated by ZROBIM architects in December 2018, is a true embodiment of artistic vision and cultural fusion. The project stemmed from a unique client brief that aimed to encapsulate the essence of a Soviet professor's apartment, adorned with artifacts collected during his extensive travels across Africa. The ambition was to create a one-of-a-kind café atmosphere that transcends current design trends, allowing individuality and character to dictate the aesthetic language of the space.

The design philosophy of MOBY DICK revolves around the idea of an 'unfashionable' interior, where the charm lies in its distinct personality rather than fleeting trends. This conception led to the meticulous selection of finishing materials that evoke nostalgia for the Soviet era. Key elements such as herringbone parquet flooring, classic ceiling cornices, and mosaic tiles reminiscent of traditional Soviet apartment entrances were thoughtfully integrated into the design, creating a cohesive narrative that speaks to the cafe's historical context.

In terms of furnishings, the project predominantly features pieces from the esteemed Italian manufacturer Calligaris, known for their blend of functionality and timeless design. The only notable exception is a bespoke soundbar crafted by BYfurniture, which adds a unique touch to the ambiance. Lighting fixtures were sourced from various renowned brands, including AROMAS from Spain, &Tradition from Denmark, and Centrsvet from Russia. A highlight of the project is the custom wall ceramic lamps made specifically for this setting, enhancing the overall aesthetic while providing functional illumination.

At the heart of the MOBY DICK coffee house lies the bar counter, a striking centerpiece that showcases the collaborative artistry of street artist Yevgeny Cowek. Crafted from chipped tiles, the bar counter reflects a blend of the original sketch by the architects and Yevgeny's creative enhancements, seamlessly incorporating motifs of African vegetation. This element not only serves as a functional space for serving coffee but also acts as a focal point that draws patrons into the narrative of the café, inviting them to experience the fusion of cultures.
