Project's Summary

M'ARS Centre for Multimedia Arts stands as a beacon of innovation in Abrau-Durso, Russia, artfully merging history with contemporary creativity. This remarkable project transforms a section of a former sparkling wine factory into a multimedia art center, showcasing a deep respect for the building's storied past. The design team, consisting of Anna Kopeina, Natalia Mastalerzh, Ilona Povilenayte, and Nata Tatunashvili, have skillfully incorporated light as both an artistic medium and a structural element, crafting an engaging experience for visitors.

Interior view of M'ARS Centre for Multimedia Arts gallery: rugged exposed brick walls, large white neon 'LIGHT LINE' installation glowing against bricks, white freestanding panel with technical diagrams on left, black fabric curtains on right, polished concrete floor, industrial ceiling with exposed metal pipes and ducts, empty open space evoking minimalist contemporary industrial style.

The M'ARS Centre, which emerged from the legacy of the first contemporary art gallery in post-Soviet Moscow, is set against the stunning backdrop of Abrau-Durso's natural beauty. The gallery occupies the entire first floor of the historic champagne factory, where the remnants of its industrial origins have been thoughtfully preserved. Factory switches and breaker boxes remain untouched, serving as a bridge between the past and the present. The design, executed in collaboration with the MANEGE Development Department, integrates elements that resonate with the essence of contemporary multimedia art, such as LED tubes and sleek metal sheets.

Vertical white neon light panels mounted on left wall emit cool glow. Smooth light grey concrete floor extends into dimly lit space beyond, highlighting industrial-modern fusion.

A unique feature of the M'ARS Centre is its innovative approach to spatial design. Unlike traditional galleries that often employ a monotonous black box aesthetic, this center embraces a dynamic interplay between dark and light spaces. Artworks are housed within carefully designed 'boxes' that blend seamlessly into the existing architecture, allowing for a delicate balance between the new installations and the historical context. This thoughtful execution enhances the viewer's experience, inviting them to explore the nuances of each artwork while appreciating the architectural integrity of the building.

Tall, vertical corrugated dark gray metal panels with textured surfaces line the left wall, contrasting the rough, earthy exposed stone brick wall on the right. A light oak wooden counter desk protrudes forward with clean lines and a cutout shelf. Polished concrete floor reflects soft yellow lighting from exposed ceiling beams and linear LED strips. Industrial contemporary style preserves factory elements.

The center's design also includes striking interventions, such as the corridor where the registration desk and lockers meld into a sculptural, solid steel piece. This enticing entrance sets a captivating tone for the exhibitions that follow. One of the highlights is the secret room at the end of the exhibition space, which offers visitors a tranquil environment enhanced by natural light. Here, guests can don VR helmets to embark on a virtual journey through the original Moscow MARS center, providing a unique blend of reality and digital exploration.

The innovative design principles applied throughout the space not only elevate the visitor experience but also contribute to the ongoing dialogue between contemporary art and its historical surroundings. This multimedia hub stands as a testament to the transformative power of design, inviting guests to engage with art in a setting that is both respectful of the past and forward-looking in its vision.
