Ku.Be House of Culture and Movement: A New Typology in Architecture for Healthy Living and Community Development
Project's Summary
Ku.Be House of Culture and Movement: A New Typology in Architecture
The Ku.Be House of Culture and Movement is a unique and innovative project designed by the ADEPT architectural studio. Located in the municipality of Frederiksberg, it was created as a focal point for the community and wider area of Copenhagen. The brief was simple – to create a building that would bring people together and improve their quality of life. But the architects went a step further, designing a space that blends theatre, sport, and learning to promote a healthy life for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or interest.
A Space for Everyone
The Ku.Be House of Culture and Movement is more than just a building – it's a new typology in architecture. The six primary volumes, each with its own program, are clad in a unique colour and material, defining them within the building. From the outside, these shapes are implied in the fragmented tile façade. The space is designed to encourage alternate forms of movement, with a focus on promoting physical activity and healthy living. The Labyrinth and the Mousetrap are just two of the many features that make this space unique.
Connecting People and Nature
The urban gardens outside the Ku.Be House of Culture and Movement form the connection between the building and the urban realm. They play an important role in expressing the six volumes and the activities happening inside. The diverse landscape, featuring microclimates with changing sounds, lights, and scents, blends seamlessly into the interior hill. Integrated slides reach out into the gardens and end in an amphitheatre outside. The result is a space that connects people with nature and promotes a healthy, active lifestyle.
A Catalyst for Community Development
The Ku.Be House of Culture and Movement is more than just a building – it's a catalyst for community development. By integrating the community to such an extent, it looks to become an incubator for further development within the neighbourhood. The space is designed to evolve based on the specific wants and needs of its users, promoting a sense of ownership and community engagement. By bringing people together, the Ku.Be House of Culture and Movement is helping to create links between people who might not otherwise connect with each other – and that's what makes it such an innovative and exciting project.
