Project's Summary

The Kara Woods Residence, situated in Willard, WI, is an innovative project designed by WholeTrees Architecture, aiming to accommodate two Franciscan Sisters who are joining the vibrant community at the Christine Center. This sacred site, known as a Natural Sanctuary for spiritual deepening and global transformation, was chosen by the Sisters due to its serene ambiance and profound connection to nature. Seeking a home that could nurture their artistic, intellectual, creative, and spiritual endeavors, the Sisters collaborated with WholeTrees Architecture to create a stunning low sod-roofed structure, completed in the autumn of 2010.

The unique design of the Kara Woods Residence effortlessly blends functionality with natural aesthetics. The centerpiece of this WholeTree creation is a round workshop space, providing ample room for the Sisters to engage in their artistic pursuits. This circular haven radiates a sense of unity and harmony, enhancing the Sisters' creative energy. As the workshop extends eastward, it seamlessly integrates with an encompassing living area, offering a seamless flow between the artistic and private spheres of their lives.

The construction of the Kara Woods Residence was meticulously carried out, adhering to the principles of WholeTrees Architecture. This architectural studio, renowned for its sustainable and regenerative approach, utilizes natural materials to create structures that harmonize with the surrounding environment. The low sod roof not only minimizes the visual impact of the residence but also provides exceptional insulation, ensuring energy efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint. The choice of WholeTree construction brings the beauty of nature indoors, enhancing the spiritual experience of the Sisters within their living space.

With the completion of the Kara Woods Residence, the Franciscan Sisters have found a haven that encapsulates their diverse passions and aspirations. This extraordinary dwelling not only caters to their artistic and intellectual pursuits but also facilitates their spiritual growth. Nestled within the Christine Center, a sanctuary dedicated to transformation, the Sisters can now immerse themselves in the serene surroundings, fostering inner peace and deepening their connection to the natural world. The Kara Woods Residence stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of innovative architecture, spirituality, and artistic expression.
