Efficient & Sustainable Design: Peoria International Airport

The General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport, located in Peoria, Illinois, has established strong connections around the world through the presence of multinational companies in the region. In order to meet the growing demand for enplanements and accommodate future growth, a new airport terminal was designed and built. The decision to construct a replacement facility led to the creation of a 121,000-square-foot, single-level terminal featuring 12 gates and nine passenger boarding bridges. RS&H, a renowned architectural firm, provided a range of services including architectural, engineering, planning, and environmental support for the project.

Taking into consideration the local culture and community, the terminal was designed to reflect Peoria's unique identity. This includes elements such as the city's relationship with the Illinois River, its strong international corporate presence, and the use of local materials. The terminal's "H" plan configuration allows for expansion within the constraints of existing passenger parking and taxiways. A sloped floor design facilitates a seamless transition between the airside hold room and the apron level, accommodating various types of aircraft. The overall layout of the terminal ensures efficient circulation between aircraft operations, baggage handling, and baggage claim.

Energy efficiency and sustainability were key considerations in the terminal's design. The inclusion of clerestories and large glass panels in public spaces allows for ample natural daylighting. Strategically positioned overhangs provide solar protection while still allowing natural light to illuminate the interior. The terminal itself is constructed with a steel frame and features a masonry cladding of brick and stone. Inside, warm tones of wood paneling and bronze metal accents create a welcoming and visually appealing atmosphere.

The success of the new terminal at Peoria International Airport has not gone unnoticed. In 2013, the airport was honored with the Illinois Public Airports Association (IPAA) Outstanding Achievement Award. This recognition was awarded to the Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria for their efforts in creating the new terminal, which has contributed to record levels of passenger activity since its opening in 2011.
