Explorative Home: A Harmonious Retreat in Guangzhou

Located in Guangzhou, China, the Explorative Home project by the Spring Design Office architectural studio is a testament to the constant exploration of the relationship between life and dwellings. Led by Chief Designer Wu Jiachun, this human-oriented living space took over 700 days to create. Wu Jiachun focused on the occupants' unconscious expectations of life and their perceptions of the outside world in order to reimagine this home.

The dining room, positioned right inside the entrance, sets the tone for the entire space. Irregularly shaped pendant lamps highlight this area, creating an ambiance full of warmth and laughter. It is a place where family members gather to share meals and enjoy quality time with relatives and friends. In today's busy world, having free and "idle" time is a luxury. A pleasing and relaxing home allows individuals to find inner tranquility and enjoy the company of loved ones in a cozy manner.

To optimize the limited space, Wu Jiachun broke away from the original cramped layout and organized a clear, smooth circulation. The dining room and living room are separated by a change in floor height, with removable steps marking off the living room and adding a sense of structure to the space. At the back of the living room, a multifunctional area serves as a transitional space between the private and public zones. This flexible area can be transformed into an open or closed space, enhancing the utilization efficiency of the limited space.

The overall color palette of the space is dominated by calming black, white, and gray tones, punctuated by the vibrancy of an apricot sofa and gold and blue chairs. Different material textures, shades, lines, and blocks are expertly combined to enrich the layering of the space. The transition from the open area to the private space is seamless, and the simplistic design language contributes to a unique spatial aesthetic. Meticulous and exquisite design details can be found in every corner of the space, reflecting the owner's preference for a modern style and their pursuit of a quality life.

One notable design element is a hidden door beside the living room. The designer strategically sets boundaries between different areas using steps and hues. Contrasting wood shades were chosen to create different experiences, sparking curiosity and encouraging exploration of the unknown space. These meticulous and ingenious design details not only bring convenience to the dwellers' daily lives but also offer infinite possibilities for discovery.

The Explorative Home project is a result of a dialogue between the occupants and the designer, where the living habits and preferences of every family member were explored and presented. The "appropriate" design languages used allow the designer, occupants, and space to echo each other, ultimately creating the desired home. This project exemplifies the constant pursuit of comfortable spaces that not only meet the demands of daily life but also exceed expectations.
